Relocating to a new place to live on one's own, away from one's family (whether that be for continuing higher studies or because of a job placement), has its own pros and cons, especially for a youngster. The entire thing can be a great learning experience but at the same time, can also be a stressful affair -- more so for someone who would be making the move for the first time. And among other things, the most challenging part of the relocation process is finding a suitable accommodation in the new city. After all, it would be his/her sanctuary - a place of retreat after a hard day's work. Therefore while it might take some time to get accustomed to the new city and its ways, probably the first and foremost thing one ought to do is to find a suitable abode that is safe, comfortable and pocket-friendly.
A couple of months back, my younger cousin Shefalli, after completing her engineering graduation, shifted base to Gurgaon to join HCL as a software engineer. She was absolutely over the moon for having got the MNC job in her first attempt. Of course for someone who had never lived away from family, the prospect of leaving the safe confines and comforts of her home and moving to an altogether new city to live on her own, was initially intimidating. So it's quite natural to feel somewhat nervous but she was equally excited as well about the new phase of her life and about facing the challenges of the outside world on her own.
Upon arriving in Delhi, initially she stayed at my flat in Rohini for a few weeks but Rohini being so far away from her workplace in Gurgaon, the long commute of almost three hours (one and a half hours of travel time on an average on each commute -- back and forth) used to leave her completely exhausted by the end of the day. Therefore she decided to find an accommodation nearer to her office so that she wouldn't have to waste much time in commuting. As planned, the next Sunday we set out to find for her, a good place to stay in Gurgaon. Vicinity to her office was an important criteria for deciding which one to choose, therefore we diligently searched around the locality. We did come across a few flats that were up for renting, but most of them were highly priced. Moreover her parents were not too keen about Shefalli renting an entire flat to herself. Their apprehension was understandable - besides being concerned about her safety, they also feared that she being completely new to the city and with a new job to focus on, the added responsibilities of single-handedly looking after a flat and the related house-chores could be too much of a burden for her.
The next option was to go for a PG accommodation. Well, for a newbie in a city, the idea of living in a PG rather than in a rented flat makes sense. All that one needs to do is to pack his/her bags and move into the PG, without having to worry about the maintenance hassles and other such chores. However, although quite a few privately-managed PG accommodations are mushrooming around, but finding a decent PG in a safe locality isn't always easy, especially for someone who is new to the city. The few PGs that we visited and inspected that day were not to Shefalli's liking - considering their rent, the rooms were either very congested or were quite untidy. She was starting to feel dejected, our house-hunt mission was on the brink of ending on a failed note. Thankfully just then, I recalled that one of my former office colleagues Neha, too lives in Gurgaon. So I sought her help and she suggested us to try at
OYO PG. It's a dedicated online renting portal to help people find PG accommodations, which in itself, is indeed a unique and wonderful concept.
OYO Life has surely simplified the entire process of searching for PG accommodations a great deal. It's a wonderfully designed portal and undoubtedly a lot of thought has gone into its construction. In the search box, one just has to type in the city's name where one needs a PG accommodation and the results will show up. Thereafter one can sift through the results based on the gender (whether one needs a Girls only PG or a Boys Only PG or a unisex one). One can also choose a PG based on its monthly rent (whether it is to be below Rs 5,000, or between Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,500 or between Rs 7,500 to Rs 10,000 or above Rs 10,000). Similarly an option to choose a PG based on its occupancy type has also been given (i.e. whether one is looking for a single occupancy room or a double occupancy or a triple occupancy or a quadruple occupancy room). And in the end, one simply has to specify his/her preferred locality for the PG accommodation and voila, the specific results will show up on the page!

Given the ease with which one can search for a PG accommodation on OYO Life, it hardly took about ten minutes for Shefalli to shortlist three PGs out of all the choices and after visiting them one by one, she chose the third PG (located in Sector 22A) to be her new home! She has taken a double occupancy room, which has more than enough amenities provided -- like beds and mattresses, cupboards, free Wi-Fi, refrigerator, washing machine, RO water purifier, Geyser in the washroom and Power Backup to name a few. The rent too is reasonable with just one month's rent as security deposit, there was no other hidden charge nor was there any brokerage. Who wouldn't want such a warm and welcoming place to call "home" - a place to unwind and relax, a place that feels secure and nurturing? The best part is that her office is just about 3 kilometres away from her PG. She couldn't have asked for more.

It's only been about two months now since Shefalli moved into her PG accommodation but she says that it somehow makes her feel like she had always been living there. In fact she says that she had actually at once fallen in love with the place, the moment she entered it for the first time when we had gone to inspect the place. And it has become her sanctuary ever since.
